Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications are typically required for the Temporary IRS Community Mobilizer role in Chobe District Council?

Applicants usually need a minimum of a Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) with passes in English and Biology, plus relevant training in community health, environmental health, or public health from institutions like BOCODOL or UB. Prior experience in vector control, community mobilization, or IRS campaigns under the Ministry of Health and Wellness or local councils is highly valued.

What does a typical day look like for a Temporary IRS Community Mobilizer in Chobe District?

Daily tasks include door-to-door community sensitization on IRS safety and benefits, assisting spray teams with household access and consent, documenting household data using paper registers or mobile tools provided by the council, and reporting challenges to supervisors. Mobilizers often walk or cycle between villages, especially in remote areas like Kasane or Savuti, and must coordinate closely with village health committees and traditional leaders.

How does work culture and employer expectations differ for this role in Botswana compared to other countries?

Respect for hierarchy, community elders, and local customs is essential — mobilizers must consult kgosi or village development committees before entering communities and use Setswana or local dialects where appropriate. Punctuality, reliability, and cultural sensitivity are prioritized over formal credentials, and employers expect strong interpersonal skills to navigate diverse rural settings across Chobe’s floodplain and wildlife-adjacent areas.

What career progression opportunities exist after completing a temporary IRS Community Mobilizer contract?

Successful mobilizers may be considered for re-engagement in subsequent IRS cycles or transition into permanent roles such as Environmental Health Technician or Community Health Worker through further training and national recruitment drives. Some pursue certification via the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) pathways or apply for positions with NGOs like UNICEF or WHO implementing partners active in northern Botswana.

What benefits — such as leave, medical aid, or pension — are typically offered for this temporary position?

Temporary IRS roles are usually contracted under the Local Government Service Act and offer pro-rata annual leave and sick leave, but do not include medical aid or pension contributions unless specified in the individual contract. Benefits depend on funding source (e.g., Global Fund or MoHW budget) and duration — most contracts run 3–6 months during peak IRS season and exclude long-term statutory benefits.

How do I apply, and what do employers in Botswana specifically look for in candidates for this role?

Applications are submitted through Chobe District Council’s Human Resources Unit or advertised via the Botswana Government Gazette, local radio stations like Radio Botswana, or community notice boards in Kasane and Nokaneng. Employers prioritize fluency in Setswana, proven community engagement experience in Chobe or similar districts, and demonstrated understanding of malaria transmission and IRS protocols — references from previous council or MoHW engagements carry significant weight.
