You will measure and prepare surfaces, mix adhesives and grout, cut tiles to fit around corners and fixtures, and lay them evenly on floors, walls, or outdoor areas. Daily work also includes cleaning excess grout, checking levels with spirit tools, and sometimes repairing or replacing cracked or loose tiles. On larger sites, you may coordinate with bricklayers, plumbers, and site supervisors to finish tasks on schedule.

Employers value punctuality, reliability, and the ability to work neatly without constant supervision, especially on residential projects where clients are present. You are expected to respect safety rules on construction sites, use protective gear, and communicate clearly in Setswana or English. Many jobs are project-based, so building a good reputation with contractors and hardware suppliers can lead to repeat work.

You can start as a tiler's assistant or apprentice, then become a qualified tiler, and later move into a supervisory role such as site foreman or finishing works supervisor. With enough experience and capital, many tilers register as subcontractors or start their own small tiling and renovation businesses. Additional training in waterproofing, tiling design, or project management can open up higher-value commercial and government contracts.

Full-time tilers employed by established construction companies may receive paid annual leave, sick leave, and sometimes contributions to a pension or provident fund. Medical aid cover is less common for site-based trades but may be offered by larger contractors. Benefits vary widely by employer, and many tilers work as casual or contract labour where leave and medical aid are not provided.
