UMS Botswana Pty Ltd (a division of the UMS Group) is busy with an underground vertical shaft sinking project with JDS Energy & Mining Inc. (the EPCM contractor) for Lucara Botswana (Pty) Ltd at the Karowe Diamond Mine at Letlhakane in the Boteti sub-district. This exciting project is currently in the Main Sink contract phase. Shaft sinking and underground construction activities require critical skills and experience with an expert understanding of sinking methodologies, underground construction, mine health and safety, as well as contract management knowledge, which is essential. We are currently searching for suitably qualified and experienced candidates to be considered for the below positions in Letlhakane. Please note that all positions are project based.
The Winding Engine Driver will be responsible for the safe, effective and efficient movement of materials and ore, including idling, from surface to underground and back. This candidate will report to the Shaft Sinking Shift Foreman.

Key Responsibilities
- Safe and efficient operation of all shaft conveyances, skips, material equipment, associated systems and shaft start.
- Signalling and loading.
- Daily reporting and recording of work completed.
- Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) Compliance.
Requirements
- BGCSE or equivalent qualification with valid Government issued Winding Engine Driver certificate.
- Candidates must have previous experience working as a Banksman in a mining environment.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a specialised sinking construction environment.
- Knowledge and experience in signalling communication is essential (from bank to shaft bottom).
