Purpose of the Role

Charges and assists the Team Lead in blasting activities in accordance with the Mine standards and legal requirements

Key Job Responsibilities

Leads and controls day to day pit activities by optimally deploying production resources allocated to his section, taking appropriate action to ensure cost effectiveness and efficiency
Develops a sectional shift mining plan by Planning for resources allocated to his section taking into account sectional production targets and Setting priorities for activities to be carried out to achieve sectional production targets
Delivers the correct blend of ore to meet the plant needs by constantly communicating with the Stakeholders of new requirements and Taking appropriate corrective measures such as re-allocating loaders when demand for different types of ore changes
Leads and controls all activities to deliver the charging plan
Ensures that the charging plan is followed by re-checking and ensuring that holes are still in accordance with the drilling plan, measuring the height of the explosives charge in the hole to ensure that the correct amount of explosives has been pumped
Transports explosives from the magazines to the charging area as per the legal requirements and updates magazine registers
Posts the necessary barricades and signs to prevent inadvent entry to locations where explosives are kept and ensures that entry is only granted when all legal requirements are met.
Conducts density checks on bulk expolsives
Ties-in the blast in accordance with the blast simulation and connects up the detonators to blasting cable in a manner that ensures blast initiation
Examines blasted areas for any misfires according to procedure, e.g. demarcates any misfired holes
Investigates new/alternative mining technologies in order to increase productivity
Creates an enabling environment for an innovative workforce

Other Job Responsibilities

Recommends and incorporates cost saving initiatives into budgets
Analyses the sectional area’s financial needs to develop a budget and ensures sufficient financial resources to meet business needs.
Coordinates and monitors the implementation of safety, health and environmental programs in area of responsibility taking cognisance of all legal requirements
