We have an opportunity for Head, Collections and Recoveries – Retail Banking Botswana
JOB PURPOSE
- To add value to the strategic direction, planning and performance of the Retail Credit function and to ensure that the collections and Recoveries department is managed efficiently and effectively to enable it to meet business objectives towards minimizing credit losses and maximizing recoveries.
- Comply with group and regulatory guidance ensuring that all controls are in place, no loose riverts and preventing operational loses.
RESPONSIBILITIES
People
Reviewing the collections organization structure and ensuring that it is aligned to the Group Collections Standard.
- Capacity planning is managed in accordance to Group requirements so as to ensure adequate collection resources to deliver business objectives.
- Ensuring proper management of account receivables by minimizing credit losses of current portfolio and maximizing recoveries.
- Ensuring appropriate and effective debt collection actions are being taken against delinquent and problematic customers efficiently.
- Providing feedback concerning changes in customer payment behavior to Collections’ counterparts in CB Credit Risk and to the Product or Business team so that appropriate changes can be made to policies, procedures and business strategy.
- Creating and maintaining an active training and learning Collections environment to ensure excellence in Collections Management.
- Ensuring all Collections policies and procedures are compliance with Group Policies and Standards. In country policies should be documented and regularly updated.
- Ensuring procedures are in place to manage operational risk, reputational risk and compliance to TCF policies.
- Ensuring that only accredited external parties are selected to provide outsource agency collections, field collections, litigation, asset valuation and disposal.
- Ensuring adequate controls and compliance to external regulatory requirements with respect to collection activities.
- Managing collections expenses proactively by regularly reviewing the reasons for variances against budget and taking steps to ensure the final expense is within the budget and/or forecast.Legal, regulatory, economic and compliance
Operational Risk Framework (ORF) Implementation.
Ensure implementation of ORF requirements in order to have zero tolerance process violation in the unit.
Regulatory
- Ensure compliance with the Group’s standards and regulatory requirements pertaining to Money Laundering and KYC.
- Participate in and/or support the Bank’s effort in combating money-laundering activities.
Exercise due care and diligence on matters related to Money Laundering and KYC in the day to day operations, which include account opening and reviews, transaction monitoring, reporting suspicions, customer communication, implementing new requirements, updating and revising operating procedures, acquire relevant knowledge and training, provide support to superior and subordinates
Processes and Systems
- Manage the collections platforms including maintenance of queuing logic.
- Ensure adequate controls and processes in place.
- Ensure that relevant Collections MIS is available at all times.
KEY RELATIONS
- Lending Operations: Processing of repayments for delinquent loans and scheme management.
- Branch managers: – Posting of collections and recoveries entries received;
- Manager MI & Forecasting: – production of collections financial reports and portfolio analysis.
- Systems support team;
- Legal Department: for foreclosures and external debt collections agency liaison.
- Head CEPG for customer complaints handling.
CONTRIBUTES TO
Minimization of Credit losses through collections and maximizing recoveries;

JUDGEMENT AND COMPLEXITY
- People management thereby minimizing turnover or talent development and management to maintain a robust inventory of high potential resources for succession planning and or key positions in the collections Department,
- Daily management of the collection system.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Must have at least five years experience in Retail Banking/credit;
- University degree with a major in business studies;
- Demonstrable Experience in Collections / Recovery function at management level.
- Effective communication skills – listening, negotiating, written and oral;
- Computer literate (Word, Excel, Power Point, and the use of other spreadsheets);
- Sound knowledge of banking practice and theory;
- Sound knowledge of credit appraisal and control. Must be CSAP accredited or studying for the same; Excellent analytical/financial skills. Eye for detail;
- Good understanding of the local financial services market and retail/small business banking;
- Good presentation skills;
- Good interpersonal skills;
