The Botswana Teaching Professionals Council (BOTEPCO) is a regulatory body established through the provisions of the Botswana Teaching Professionals Council Act. No. 22 of 2019. The Council’s main functions are to regulate the teaching profession; maintain professional and ethical standards includingteaching knowledge, skills and competence; license teachers; establish, publish, review and maintain a code of ethics for teachers; and review as well as advise on professional standards of teachers.
The Council invites candidates with the requisite qualifications and experience to apply for the following positions.

Role Purpose
Reporting to the Council Board and Registrar, the successful candidate will be responsible for to lead, direct and oversee the Council’s legal function and to provide Board Secretarial and governance services to the Council.
Key Performance Areas
•Quality legal advice resulting in minimal litigation against the Council.
•Development of contracts and other legal documentation relating to the Council’s affairs.
•Cost effective legal services.
•Security and availability of legal documentation including contracts, correspondence, etc.
•Timely delivery and availability of legal documents and advice.
•Compliance with good corporate governance and business practices.
•Timely availability and distribution of Board packs.
•Efficient Board meetings and accurate/complete Board pack contents such as agenda, minutes, and actions.
The main duties include but are not limited to:
Strategic Planning and Leadership
•Lead the development and implementation of the departmental strategy in alignment with the Council’s overall strategic plans.
•Lead the day-to-day strategic, operational, and legal affairs of the Council.
Secretarial services
•Identify the range and depth of secretarial services needed to enable Board effectiveness and use this information to draw up a departmental strategy and plan of delivery.
•Draw up charters, policies and procedures that will provide guidance for Board secretarial service delivery.
Legal Services
•Advise the Board and management on issues of compliance with the Act and other legislation.
•Acquaint Management and the Board members with matters of law salient to the Council.
•Provide legal advice based on robust research and sound judgement to safeguard and protect the rights and interests of the Council.
Finance, Human Capital. Risk, Stakeholder Engagement
•Authorize departmental expenditure in accordance with financial policies and budgets.
•Lead the departmental recruitment, selection, performance management, learning and development, employee relations, talent development, staff welfare and succession planning.
•Perform such other related activities directed by the Board and the Registrar.
Qualifications and Experience
•A degree in Law and a license to practice law in Botswana.
•Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Botswana is essential.
•A postgraduate degree and additional qualification in corporate governance would be an added advantage.
•A minimum of fifteen (15) years post qualification experience in a legal advisory role. At least five (5) of these years should have been spent in an executive leadership role with Board secretarial responsibilities.
