What qualifications do I need to apply for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position in the Faculty of Business & Accounting at Botho University?

A relevant Master’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field is typically the minimum requirement for a Lecturer role, while a PhD or substantial progress toward one is often expected for Senior Lecturer or Fellow positions. Professional certifications such as ACCA, CIMA, or BICA membership can strengthen your application, especially for accounting-focused modules.

What are the common day-to-day responsibilities for this role?

You will typically prepare and deliver lectures, facilitate tutorials, set and mark assessments, and provide academic support to students. Additional duties often include curriculum review, research supervision, and participation in departmental meetings or community engagement activities.

What is the work culture and teaching expectation like at a private university in Botswana?

Private institutions in Botswana generally expect punctuality, student-centred teaching, and responsiveness to both full-time and distance-learning cohorts. You may also need to work some evenings or weekends to accommodate working students, and there is usually a strong emphasis on maintaining high pass rates and student satisfaction.

What career progression can I realistically expect from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer or Fellow?

Progression usually depends on a combination of higher academic qualifications, published research, teaching experience, and positive performance reviews. Moving from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer often requires a PhD or equivalent professional standing, while a Fellow role may involve more research leadership, mentorship of junior staff, and institutional service.

What typical benefits are offered to academic staff in Botswana, such as leave, medical aid, or pension?

Academic staff in Botswana commonly receive annual leave aligned with the academic calendar, contributory medical aid, and a pension or provident fund. Some institutions also offer professional development support, such as funding for further studies or conference attendance, though the exact package varies by employer.

How do I apply for this position and what do employers in Botswana look for in an application?

Applications are usually submitted through the university’s online recruitment portal or by emailing a cover letter, CV, and certified academic transcripts to the HR department. Employers in Botswana typically look for clear evidence of your teaching experience, relevant qualifications, professional body registration where applicable, and a well-structured CV that highlights both academic and industry exposure.
