Applicants usually need a Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science (BLIS) or a related field from a recognised university, such as the University of Botswana or a SADC-accredited institution. A postgraduate qualification (e.g., MLIS) is often preferred, and registration with the Botswana Library Association (BOLA) is increasingly expected for professional credibility.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Librarian in a Botswana college setting?
Daily duties include managing library resources (acquisition, cataloguing, and circulation), supporting students and lecturers with research and information literacy training, and maintaining digital and physical collections. Librarians also assist with academic integrity initiatives and may contribute to curriculum support through resource development aligned with national education priorities.
How does workplace culture and professional expectations for librarians differ in Botswana compared to other countries?
Librarians in Botswana are expected to be highly collaborative, culturally responsive, and adaptable—often bridging gaps between traditional knowledge systems and modern information practices. Respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and community engagement (e.g., outreach to local schools or villages) are valued, reflecting broader national values outlined in Vision 2036 and the National Education Policy.
What realistic career progression paths exist for librarians working in Botswana’s education sector?
With experience and further study, librarians can advance to roles such as Senior Librarian, Library Coordinator, or Head of Learning Resources within colleges or universities. Some transition into academic posts, educational policy advisory roles with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, or leadership positions in national institutions like the Botswana National Library Service.
What benefits—such as leave, medical aid, and pension—are commonly offered to librarians employed by colleges in Botswana?
Most accredited colleges offer annual leave (typically 21–30 days), sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave in line with the Botswana Employment Act. Medical aid is often provided through schemes like BONF or private providers, and pension contributions usually follow the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund (BOPOPF) framework or equivalent employer-sponsored plans.
How do I apply for a Librarian position at a college like Arthur Portland College, and what do employers in Botswana specifically look for in candidates?
Applications are typically submitted via email or online portals with a CV, certified academic transcripts, and a cover letter addressing key competencies. Employers prioritise candidates with local experience, evidence of ICT proficiency (especially integrated library systems), commitment to lifelong learning, and alignment with Botswana’s national goals for education and digital inclusion.
