The Roads Materials Technician will perform technical duties in the sampling, testing, and inspection of materials – including soil, aggregates, concrete, and bitumen used in road construction and maintenance. This role ensures all materials meet project specifications and regulatory standards through both on-site field testing and laboratory analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Field Sampling: Collect representative samples of soil, bituminous mixtures, and aggregates from construction sites, borrow pits and/or stockpiles for quality assessment.
- Quality Control Testing: Perform standardized tests such as moisture-density (using Troxler or similar Nuclear Densimeters), concrete slump, air entrainment, and aggregate gradation.
- Plant Inspection: Verify material proportioning at concrete and asphalt plants; calibrate scales and dispensers to ensure mix accuracy.
- Documentation & Reporting: Record technical data in specialized software and prepare detailed reports on material suitability for the Resident Engineer.
- Equipment Maintenance: Clean, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory and field testing equipment to maintain high accuracy.
