Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications are typically required for a Senior Lecturer in Electrical & Communication Systems Engineering at BIUST?

A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Communication Systems, or a closely related field is required, along with evidence of research and publications. In Botswana, universities often also require a minimum of three years of teaching or industry experience at the tertiary level. Professional registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) of Botswana is advantageous but not always mandatory.

What are the common day-to-day responsibilities of this role?

The senior lecturer prepares and delivers undergraduate and postgraduate lectures, designs laboratory sessions, and supervises student projects and theses. They also engage in research activities, apply for grants, and publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals. Administrative duties include participating in faculty meetings, curriculum development, and mentoring junior staff.

What is the typical work culture and expectations for academic staff in Botswana?

Botswana’s higher‑education environment values collegiality, respect for hierarchy, and a strong emphasis on community impact and relevance to national development goals. Faculty are expected to maintain regular office hours, be accessible to students, and contribute to outreach or industry‑collaboration projects. Punctuality, professional dress, and adherence to the university’s code of conduct are standard expectations.

What career progression opportunities exist for a Senior Lecturer in this field?

After demonstrating sustained teaching excellence, research productivity, and successful grant acquisition, a senior lecturer can be promoted to Associate Professor and eventually to Full Professor. Leadership paths include becoming a department head, dean of engineering, or director of a research centre. Some academics also move into policy advisory roles with government agencies or parastatals focused on energy and telecommunications.

What benefits are commonly offered to academic staff at BIUST or similar institutions in Botswana?

Benefits typically include annual leave (around 30 days), medical aid contributions, and a pension or provident fund scheme matched by the employer. Many universities also provide housing allowances, research travel grants, and access to professional development programs. Specific packages vary by institution and are negotiated based on qualifications and experience.

How should a job seeker apply for this position and what do Botswana employers look for in applicants?

Applications are usually submitted online through the BIUST careers portal, requiring a cover letter, detailed CV, copies of qualifications, and a research statement. Employers in Botswana prioritize evidence of teaching effectiveness, a solid research record, and the ability to contribute to national development objectives in engineering. Demonstrating familiarity with local industry challenges and a willingness to engage in community outreach strengthens an application.
