ADVERTISEMENT FOR AN INDEPENDENT TRUSTEE ON THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF BOTSWANA

DEFINED CONTRIBUTION PENSION FUND

The Trustees of the University of Botswana Defined Contribution Pension Fund “the Fund” are in the process of recruiting a qualified and experienced individual to serve on the Fund as an Independent Trustee.

The University of Botswana Defined Contribution Pension Fund is a defined contribution pension fund registered and approved by the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) and the Botswana Unified Revenue Service.

Eligibility of Candidates

The candidate should be an individual who is not an employee of University of Botswana or its subsidiaries or any service provider to the Fund. The Candidate should not be an Independent Trustee in more than one Fund.

The incumbent will be responsible for the following:

• To work with the Board of Trustees in achieving the objectives of the Fund, actively participate in Trustee meetings and Committee meetings with the intention to add value and bring innovative ideas that can assist the Fund to deliver sustainable long term results to the members of the Fund.
• Act independently and exercise their powers in a manner that is impartial and not influenced by inappropriate considerations.
• Ensure that the Fund is financially sound, responsibly managed and governed in accordance with its Rules and the applicable legislation.

Qualifications and Requirements of Candidates

• A degree, preferably a master’s degree in Investment Management, Risk Management, Actuarial Science or equivalent qualifications such as Chartered Accountant, Chartered Finance Analyst and Fellow Risk Management.
• Basic knowledge of the NBFIRA Act, Retirement Funds Act, Trust Act and any other relevant Acts.
• Certificate Qualification in Retirement or Insurance.
• Ability to understand strategic issues, accept legal duties, liabilities and responsibilities of a Trustee.
• Sound knowledge of corporate governance, sufficient time and commitment to fulfil the role.

• At least 10 years working experience in pensions/financial services or risk environment.
• Should be well vested in pension, investments and insurance issues.
• Experience of Board membership & Trusteeship will be an added advantage.
• The individual must be of good standing to be approved by the Non Bank Financial Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) to be a Trustee.

Applicants with a professional and/or working background in finance, risk management and compliance will be favourably considered.

Board Tenure – The Independent Trustee shall hold office for a three (3) year period.
