Job Purpose

To monitor, direct and coordinate all operations of the National Grid to ensure a continuous, safe, efficient and reliable power supply to customers in accordance with Southern African Power Pool standards.

Key Performance Areas

  1. Maximum safety of personnel and equipment at all times
  2. Continuity of supply and optimal power flows
  3. Enforcement of safety rules and system operational procedures.
  4. Analysis of system faults/disturbances and effecting remedial action
  5. Implementation of energy/power trading schedules
  6. Economic dispatch of power sources (internal and external)
  7. Availability of system performance information.
  8. Training of staff within designated area
  9. Availability of system operational reports
Principal Accountabilities/Responsibilities
  1. Monitor, control and operate the national grid in an efficient manner to reduce losses and to ensure safety to personnel and equipment.
  2. Issues operational instructions to Distribution and Generation Control Centers.
  3. Restoration of power supply following interruptions in a timely and orderly manner.
  4. Reconfiguration of circuits under various scenarios to ensure stability of the system
  5. Maintains quality of supply at all times.
  6. Prepares  monthly reports assigned by Operations Engineer
  7. Implements Southern African Power Pool power/energy schedules in order to meet the agreed obligations; including real time energy trading.
  8. Carries out post fault analysis for decision-making purposes, and prepares reports for further analysis and investigation.
  9. Coordinates commissioning of new Transmission equipment for smooth integration with existing equipment.
  10. Carries out switching and sanctions the issuing and cancellation of safety documents for safe working purposes.
  11. Prepares morning handover report in order to apprise the supervisor on the previous day’s system performance.
  12. Contributes to the draft sectional budget preparation.
  13. UNDERTAKES SUCH OTHER RELATED DUTIES AS DIRECTED BY THE SUPERVISOR
Qualifications

Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent Senior Authorisation
