About the Company

Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) is a state-owned company for electrical power generation, transmission and distribution in Botswana. It was established in 1970 and is currently the only electricity supplier in the country. BPC represents Botswana in the Southern African Power Pool. Morupule Power Station (coal-fired) in Palapye supplies 80% of domestically generated electricity, however the country is dependent on importing energy from its neighbours. Its capacity is estimated to be around 132 MW. The region's main power supplier, South Africa, is experiencing its own problems with under-capacity blackouts. A plan to boost Morupule station with four new 150 MW units is underway and gathering financial support from several sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and certifications are typically required for a CFO role at a parastatal like Botswana Power Corporation?

A minimum of a Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration is usually expected, along with professional certifications such as ACCA, CIMA, or CA(SA). Extensive experience in senior financial management, preferably within the energy or public sector, is also essential. Employers in Botswana highly value candidates with a track record in governance and stakeholder management.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a CFO in a Botswana parastatal?

Daily duties include overseeing financial reporting, managing treasury and cash flow, leading budget preparation, and advising the board on strategic financial decisions. The CFO also ensures compliance with Botswana's Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act and liaises with government ministries. Regular engagement with auditors, regulators, and international partners is common given the sector's importance.

How does the work culture and expectations differ in Botswana's public sector compared to private companies?

Parastatals like BPC emphasize protocol, hierarchical decision-making, and accountability to government and citizens. Punctuality and respect for authority are valued, though processes can be slower due to bureaucratic requirements. Building relationships across ministries and communities is often as important as technical competence.

What career progression opportunities exist after serving as CFO at a major parastatal in Botswana?

Successful CFOs often advance to Managing Director or CEO roles within the same organization or other state-owned enterprises. Some transition to permanent secretary positions in government ministries or join private sector boards. International opportunities with development finance institutions or regional power utilities also become accessible.

What benefits are typically offered to senior executives in Botswana's parastatal sector?

Benefits usually include comprehensive medical aid coverage, generous pension schemes often through the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund or similar structures, and substantial annual leave. Housing allowances, vehicle benefits, and performance bonuses may also be provided. Specific packages vary by employer and are typically negotiated at executive level.

How should I apply for a CFO position at Botswana Power Corporation, and what do employers prioritize in candidates?

Applications are typically submitted through the organization's official careers portal or the Public Service Management Directorate for senior appointments. Employers prioritize demonstrated leadership in complex financial environments, understanding of Botswana's regulatory landscape, and commitment to national development goals. Strong references from previous board-level positions and evidence of ethical conduct are critically important.
