About the Company

Wilderness or wildlands are Earth's natural environments that have not been significantly modified by human activity, or any nonurbanized land not under extensive agricultural cultivation. The term has traditionally referred to terrestrial environments, though growing attention is being placed on marine wilderness. Recent maps of wilderness suggest it covers roughly one-quarter of Earth's terrestrial surface, but is being rapidly degraded by human activity. Even less wilderness remains in the ocean, with only 13.2% free from intense human activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and experience are typically required for a Concession General Management Couple role in Botswana?

Employers usually require a diploma or degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, or Tourism, coupled with 5–10 years of senior lodge or camp management experience. Both partners must demonstrate strong leadership, financial acumen, and guest relations skills. Wilderness and similar operators often prefer candidates with prior experience in remote or wilderness settings.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities for a management couple at a concession in Botswana?

One partner typically oversees operations, staff management, and guest experience, while the other handles finance, procurement, and administration. Both share responsibility for maintaining high service standards, ensuring safety protocols, and managing relationships with local communities and conservation authorities. You will also represent the concession during guest interactions and resolve any operational issues promptly.

How does the work culture and lifestyle differ for management couples in Botswana's remote concessions?

The role demands long hours, seven-day availability during peak season, and living on-site in often isolated locations with limited connectivity. Employers expect couples to model professionalism, foster team cohesion among diverse staff, and respect local cultural norms and community partnerships. Adaptability, resilience, and a genuine passion for conservation and hospitality are essential for success.

What benefits and leave arrangements are standard for this type of position in Botswana?

Benefits typically include furnished accommodation, meals, medical aid, and a pension or provident fund contribution, though specifics vary by employer. Leave is usually structured as rotational, such as six weeks on and two weeks off, or similar cycles depending on the concession's remoteness. Always clarify these details during the interview process, as policies differ between operators.

What career progression opportunities exist after working as a Concession General Management Couple?

Successful couples often advance to regional management roles, area management overseeing multiple properties, or corporate positions in operations or training. Some transition into consultancy, lodge ownership, or conservation-focused leadership roles within the broader Southern African tourism sector. Building a strong track record with reputable brands like Wilderness significantly enhances long-term prospects.

How should I apply for this role, and what do Botswana employers prioritize in applications?

Apply directly through company career portals, hospitality recruitment agencies, or industry networks like the Hospitality Association of Botswana. Employers prioritize proven joint management experience, references from previous luxury lodges, and demonstrated stability as a couple. Tailor your application to highlight financial results, guest satisfaction achievements, and community engagement experience.
