Assistant Laboratory Manager

Our Client is a market-leading independent provider of inspection and testing services for the metals and minerals industry, established over 135 years ago and operating in 35 countries. The Company is currently seeking to recruit suitably qualified and experienced applicants to the following positions for their Botswana operation:

           1. Assistant Laboratory Manager

1.1         Job Purpose

The overall purpose is to cover the office of the Lab Manager in his absence; offer localised technical assistance to the Laboratory staff; ensure that efficient, effective and high quality analytical results are provided and targets met in order to meet reporting deadlines and turnaround times.

1.2         Main Accountabilities

1.2.1     Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ)

• Full participation in the implementation of ISO 17025:2005 Quality Management System.
• Documentation of and maintenance of the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality records
• Monthly trend analysis of Safety Lead Indicators (PTO’s, FLRA, TOPS, Hazard reports, work area inspections and layered inspections.
• Review and revision of all HSE procedures according to the requirements of the new Barrick Safety and Health Management System etc, etc.

1.2.2     Other Routine Duties

• Carry out duties in accordance with Laboratory code of practice, COSHH and client company policies.
• Prepare monthly period invoices for the services offered on site.
• Deputise the Lab Manager; Prepare and circulate monthly QA/QC report at the end of the month.
• Maintain, review and validate methods on ICP-OES, ED-XRF, C-IC (Chlorides, Fluoride), AAS, LECO, Electro-gravemetry, Iodometric Titration, pH and Conductivity, Sample Digestion and Weighing.
• Overall supervision and management of all laboratory operations.
• Arrange for maintenance and service of the laboratory equipment.

1.3         Qualifications, Experience and Attributes

A Degree in Chemistry, plus a minimum of 5 years’ experience in classical and instrumental analytical chemistry, specific to metals and minerals analysis and/or water analysis. Quality oriented with good knowledge of ISO 17025, Team player and good leadership skills.
